That Special Something
Focusing on your unique talents can make you stand out in the admissions process

Like so many high school students, I spent my four years at Princess
Anne High School with a particular goal in mind: getting a fat envelope from a
university that would provide me with a good education (and, let's be honest, a
prestigious degree). For a few students, receiving such an acceptance letter is
a simple matter of maintaining a good GPA in difficult classes, doing well on
standardized tests and setting aside time for extracurricular activities.
However, for me and for my fifty peers in the IB (International Baccalaureate)
program at Princess Anne, simply doing these three things wasn’t going to cut
it. We were all smart kids who did well in hard classes, scored high on our
boards and were active outside of the classroom. College applicants from other
schools across the nation became less of a concern because we had to focus on
distinguishing ourselves from the other amazing students in our IB classes. Our
fiercest competition was amongst each other.
